Game On started as a weekly therapeutic social group for children with ASD, but it became so much more. Week after week, children came together to play board games, navigate D&D campaigns, and connect with each other on Minecraft. Even during the difficult times of Covid, Game On groups found ways to continue to play and meet online. The community grew and families quickly came to know Game On as a place where their children could be themselves and feel safe while learning and having fun.
4 years passed and in 2023, Game On opened up to the general public as a non-therapeutic table top game club. It has become a place where children with a variety of diagnosed and undiagnosed neurodivergences can meet up and connect with other like-minded participants. We laugh together over comical CAH combos, share our excitement over new Pokemon releases, and devour pounds of tater tots each week.
Game On is a place where everyone is welcome and kids don't have to pretend to be someone they're not in order to belong. It's a place where they can be themselves and make meaningful connections with others who understand them. Game On is a testament to the power of community, and it shows us that with a little bit of compassion, empathy, and understanding, we can create safe and welcoming spaces for everyone to be themselves.
