Our social skills class uses the PEERS curriculum to teach teens and tweens how to make and keep lasting friendships.
The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®) is a researched-based social skills training program developed at UCLA. It has a strong evidence base for use with teens and young adults on the spectrum in explicit teaching of social skills that don't always come naturally. While evidence supports efficacy in the ASD population, it is also appropriate for other teens and young adults with ADHD, anxiety, depression and other related social/emotional challenges.
Check out the PEERS website for research articles and news stories about the program's successes.
Our classes are for both youth (ages 11-17) and their families to learn how to best navigate social nuances which seem to come easily to some kids, but not others.
If you identify with the following statements, PEERS® may be a good fit for you:
The PEERS® program is a proven and effective intervention for individuals on the Autism Spectrum, as well as those with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other social/emotional challenges.
Both parents and adolescents are active participants in our program, allowing for simultaneous learning and immediate application of skills at home.
To join, participants should possess adequate language ability, self-regulation skills, and social motivation. Our classes are fast-paced and these prerequisites set teens up for success.
The following social skills are covered in each training:
PEERS® sessions run for 14 weeks. Parents and youth learn in separate sessions that run simultaneously, allowing parents to talk to their child about the skills learned right away and serve as a social coach for them.
Teen Groups are capped at 6 participants to allow for learning to be highly individualized.
Parent meetings are held virtually on Sunday evenings
Youth meetings are held in person Monday evenings or online Tuesday evenings
PEERS® meets twice a week for 1.5 hours each meeting in 14 week cycles. Parent training comprises one meeting and youth training comprises the second. It is expected that youth and their parents attend all 14 weeks in order to get the full benefit of the program.
Mental Health costs across the country are on the rise. However, Game On Youth attempts to keep costs as low as possible to make our program more accessible. A typical teen mental health therapy session will cost a family about $75-150 per hour.
PEERS® through Game On Youth is just $38/hour - about the cost of a specialist copay
